Medicaid: Expansion VS. Status Quo – What’s the Price?

Despite high public approval ratings for Medicaid expansion, neither Kansas nor Missouri has implemented it. With financial data from those states which have passed it now available, the long term effects are becoming more apparent, offering a clearer picture of the actual effects of this legislation. Come join a conversation to discuss the future of Medicaid expansion in our two states. The dinner will take place from 5:30-6:30 at the Yates–Gill College Union. American Public Square Members may register for free, dinner tickets are $25 for non members. Dinner admission includes registration for the program afterwards from 6:30-8:00.

Panelists

Senator Jim Denning, Senate Majority Leader for the state of Kansas. Denning served in the Kansas House of Representatives from 2011-12 before being elected to the State Senate in 2012 and again in 2016. He is also the former CEO of Discover Vision Center (1993-2011).

Dr. Lee Norman, Secretary of Health and Environment for the State of Kansas. He was appointed by Governor Kelly in 2019, having worked as a chief medical officer and senior health systems executive. Norman also serves as the state surgeon of Kansas and is an officer in the Kansas National Guard.

Dr. David Slusky, A researcher, microeconomist, and associate professor of economics at the University of Kansas. His research is on health economics, labor economics, and public policy. Dr. Slusky also has a courtesy appointment to the University of Kansas Medical School.

John Bluford, President of the Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute, President Emeritus of Truman Medical Center, and the former CEO of Truman Medical Center (1999-2014).
