JOIN US! MAY 21

Join American Public Square and LIFT KC on May 21 for a happy hour event at Discourse Brewery and Taproom located at 7211 W. 97th Street, Overland Park, KS 66212.

As two local organizations working to strengthen relationships, broaden perspectives and serve our communities, APS and LIFT KC are excited to bring their communities together for an evening of camaraderie and conversation. Happy Hour is offered between 4:30pm and 6:30pm; the brewery is closed to the public that day, but open to registered guests of APS and LIFT KC!

Guests are invited to enjoy appetizers alongside house made brews, wines, or a non-alcoholic beverage of choice. APS’ commemorative card deck, “Cards and Conversations” will be available for those who might want to get to know each other in a meaningful and engaging way.

About the Host Organizations

American Public Square at Jewell is a community organization working to improve the tone and quality of public discourse by convening groups in civil, fact-based dialogue; educating community members on the value of working together this way; and engaging diverse audiences to ensure all voices are represented, explored, and considered.

LIFT KC—leadership in focus, together—exists to bring community members together to broaden perspectives, build relationships and inspire growth. They offer quarterly networking and learning events focused on civic interests, engaging local changemakers in conversation on important local topics.

About Discourse Brewery

Discourse Brewery opened in September 2023 and was featured in an August 2023 article by Jenna Thompson for The Kansas City Star.

“Former history teacher Matt Britton is making a seemingly dramatic career shift by opening a brewery in Overland Park.

But he believes the two occupations have many parallels.

Since before the Revolutionary War, America’s pubs have functioned as public meeting spaces, Britton explained, hosting stimulating discussions about life, spirituality and democracy.

In fact, historians believe it was in public houses — or pubs — like Boston’s Green Dragon Tavern that Samuel Adams and other members of the Sons of Liberty plotted to undermine the British government.

Britton wanted to create an equally communal space to revive meaningful (though not necessarily political) discussions. Enter Discourse Brewing…“It’s just that dialogue,” Britton said. “I’m really trying to emulate a local place where you can meet your neighbors.”
